One of the first activities that Telangana Jagruthi undertook was the revival of the celebrations of the Bathukamma festival. Telangana Jagruthi’s flagship program is ‘Bathukamma.’ Bathukamma is a festival of women and flowers celebrated widely in Telangana. Bathukamma not only signifies the importance of women and their role in society but also empowers them. It is a festival unique to Telangana with a universal message of preservation of the environment. Bathukamma festival was neglected for decades and died due to administrative apathy.

The revival of Bathukamma played a pivotal role in garnering support for the Telangana Statehood movement in a non-violent and culturally relevant manner. The celebration of Bathukamma festival had played a vital role in bringing together women from all across the Telangana Region which further provided momentum during the movement for a separate Telangana State.

Telangana Jagruthi not only played a seminal role in reviving the Bathukamma festival but also an activist role for its official recognition as one of the state festivals. Telangana Jagruthi started the mass celebration of Bathukamma in towns and fought legally for the right to celebrate the festival in the capital city, Hyderabad. Due to the decade-long efforts of Telangana Jagruthi, the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government recognized the festival as an official one. The first and newly formed State Government of Telangana has accorded the status of “State Festival” to Bathukamma.

Telangana Jagruthi, has also  unearthed long forgotten Bathukamma songs, folklore and history. We have published more than 8 volumes related to the history of the festival and documented more than 350 Bathukamma songs. We have also printed and published audio CDs of old original Bathukamma songs which were being passed on traditionally as oral folklore. Telangana Jagruthi takes pride in taking up activities related to culture, history and heritage. Bathukamma today, is widely celebrated not only in Telangana, but also, nationally and Internationally. Telangana Jagruthi on an annual basis documents the numerous songs for Bathukamma festival and brings them out in an audio and video format.
