Adopt a Farmer Family
Agrarian crisis over the decades in Telangana have costed many farmers their life. Due to financial loss and the debt trap, many farmers have committed suicide.
Telangana has seen the second highest number of suicides among all states in India. As a result of farmers committing suicide, and the loss of the breadwinners in the family, farmer families have come under immense financial, social and psychological distress.
Telangana Jagruthi identified 350 such families and started supporting them in many ways. Support from Telangana Jagruthi is four pronged:
1. Financial Support: Sudden loss of the breadwinner coupled with the debts and no alternative source of income, the farmer families were left to their fate. Telangana Jagruthi provides a direct financial support by a direct cash transfer to their bank accounts to meet their household expenses. Since November 2015, Telangana Jagruthi has provided a financial support of Rs.2500 per month to these families. This financial support will continue till the program ends in 2019.
2. Education to the Children: Children of these families are given special attention to get them admitted into the schools/Colleges. For those who have dropped out of schools, the organization works toward helping them get back to school by supporting with books and stationery and in some cases with tuition fee.
3. Counselling to the spouses: Most of the farmer widows are uneducated and many of them are daily wage workers. Telangana Jagruthi counsellors help them by facilitating psychological counselling to cope-up with the loss.
4. Training and Employment to the family members: Telangana Jagruthi provides free skill development training to members of the family. Some women receive training in self-employment courses and have become first generation entrepreneurs.
