The revival of Bathukamma played a pivotal role in garnering support for the Telangana Statehood movement in a non-violent and culturally relevant manner. The celebration of Bathukkamma festival had played a vital role in bringing together women from all across Telangana Region which further provided momentum for the movement for Telangana State
Telangana Jagruthi not only played a seminal role in reviving the Bathukamma festival, but also an activist role for its official recognition as one of the state festivals. Telangana Jagruthi started an Mass organized-celebration of Bathukamma in towns and fought legally to for the right to celebrate the festival in the capital city, Hyderabad. It turned out as a cultural renaissance. Due to decade long efforts of Telangana Jagruthi to recognize Bathukkamma as State Festival, in 20 united Andhra Pradesh government has recognized the festival as an official one. The first and newly formed State Government of Telangana has accorded a State Festival status to Bathukamma.
Telangana Jagruthi unearthed long forgotten Bathukamma songs and folklore and history. We have published more than 8 volumes related to the history and documented more than 350 Bathukamma songs. We also printed and published audio CDs of old original Bathukamma songs which passed as traditional oral folklore. Telangana Jagruthi takes pride in taking up activities related to culture, history and heritage. Now Bathukamma is widely celebrated not only in Telangana, but also, nationally and Internationally. Telangana Jagruthi on an annual basis documents the numerous songs for Bathukkamma festival and brings them out in an audio and video format.
